Story
A Life in Sioux Lookout
From the CN railway to Molstad Realty — a story told in chapters.
The Early Years
Growing Up in Sioux Lookout
Barb Molstad was born and raised in Sioux Lookout at a time when the CN railway was the lifeblood of the community. Her father's work as a CN engineer connected the family to the town's identity in a fundamental way — the railway was how people and goods moved through Northwestern Ontario, and the men and women who kept it running were pillars of the community.
Growing up in Sioux Lookout meant growing up with the lakes, the boreal forest, and the rhythms of a Northern Ontario town. It was a childhood shaped by community — neighbours who knew each other, local businesses that served as gathering places, and a sense that everyone had a stake in how the town fared.

Friendly Freddies
A Family Business, A Community Institution
Barb's mother operated Friendly Freddies, a local restaurant and convenience store that became a familiar fixture in Sioux Lookout. For many residents, Friendly Freddies was more than a place to eat or pick up supplies — it was a place to connect, to catch up, and to feel at home.
Growing up around the business gave Barb an early education in what it means to serve a community — the long hours, the relationships built over years, and the responsibility that comes with being a place people depend on.

Sam's Place
A Gathering Place for a Generation
When Barb took over the family business, she transformed it into Sam's Place — and it quickly became a beloved institution for Sioux Lookout's high school students. For a generation of young people in town, Sam's Place was the place to be after school, on weekends, and in the summers.
Running Sam's Place gave Barb a direct connection to the next generation of Sioux Lookout residents. She understood their world, their concerns, and their hopes for the community they were growing up in.

Molstad Realty
Building a Career, Serving the Community
Barb's transition into real estate brought a new chapter — one defined by helping families find their place in Sioux Lookout. After building her expertise in the field, she purchased the business where she worked and established Molstad Realty, becoming a licensed real estate broker.
Through Molstad Realty, Barb has been present for some of the most significant moments in her clients' lives — the purchase of a first home, the sale of a family property, the decision to put down roots in Northern Ontario. That work has given her an intimate understanding of the community's housing landscape and the aspirations of its residents.

Community Service
Giving Back to Sioux Lookout
Throughout her life in Sioux Lookout, Barb has been committed to giving back. Her service as President of the Sioux Lookout Rotary Club reflects a belief that community is built through participation — that the people who show up, volunteer, and take on responsibility are the ones who shape what a town becomes.
That commitment to service is what has led Barb to seek a seat on Municipal Council. She brings to this candidacy not a political career, but a lifetime of living, working, and investing in Sioux Lookout.
